Hot pink, black and a whole lot of gold. Say goodbye to your last age with a "RIP" birthday, the spooky glam theme that was made for October.

Got an October birthday? Then you already know the struggle. Every party store is wall-to-wall pumpkins, and your big day gets lost somewhere between the candy corn and the costume aisle.
So lean into it. This Long Island birthday turned Halloween season into the theme itself with one very good joke: RIP 40. The guest of honor was turning 41, so 40 got a proper send-off, complete with a gold-dripping tombstone sign, a black cake with gold spiderwebs, and a balloon garland in hot pink, black and chrome gold. Spooky, yes. But mostly glam.
What Is a "RIP" Birthday Party?
It's a funeral for your last age, and it's way more fun than it sounds. You pick the number you're leaving behind, put it on a tombstone, and throw it the send-off it deserves. Turning 31? RIP 30. Turning 51? RIP 50. It works for any age, and it pairs perfectly with October, when spiderwebs and gold pumpkins are already everywhere.
The trick is keeping it chic instead of creepy. Skip the fake blood and go for black, hot pink and gold, with a few bats and webs as your "spooky" accents. That's the whole idea behind spooky glam.
The Spooky Glam Palette
- Black for the drama: the cake, half the balloons, the tombstone.
- Hot pink so it reads "party," not "haunted house."
- Chrome and mirror gold for the glam: sequins, balloons, cake toppers, pumpkins.
- A few spooky touches: bats, spiderwebs and a dripping "RIP." That's it. Restraint is what keeps it pretty.
The Backdrop: Balloons by Krystal
Balloons by Krystal built the showpiece: a gold sequin shimmer wall wrapped in an organic balloon garland of hot pink, glossy black and chrome gold. Look closely and you'll spot wispy black feathers tucked between the balloons, plus a gold pumpkin and black and pink florals at the base. It's the photo spot, the decor and the "wow" moment all in one.
If the name sounds familiar, it should. Krystal's setup won Celebrella's Best Halloween Setup contest this year, so she knows her way around a spooky season party.
Based in Ronkonkoma, Balloons by Krystal does balloon garlands, arches, columns, walls, number and letter displays, backdrops and themed decor. She is fully licensed and insured, with no travel limits. See her work and message her on Celebrella →
The Cake: Creme De La Creme Cakes
This cake is the whole theme in one tier. Creme De La Creme Cakes went with a matte black cake, then layered on the glam: patches of gold leaf, lacy gold spiderwebs, a thick gold drip, two gold pumpkins, hot pink rosettes, pink and gold pearls, and black and hot pink flowers spilling off the top.
It's Halloween without a single cartoon ghost, which is exactly why it works for a grown-up birthday. Creme De La Creme is a full-service custom cake and dessert studio in Farmingville, serving all of Long Island and parts of NYC. The Details: I'll Make It Personal
The sign is what makes the joke land. I'll Make It Personal made a custom acrylic tombstone with "RIP" in dripping mirror gold, a pink glitter "40," pink bats, gold spiderwebs and little stars, all on black. Hung right on the sequin wall, it turns the backdrop into a punchline.
They also made the mirror gold "41" cake toppers, a nice wink that says out with the old number, in with the new. I'll Make It Personal is a Ronkonkoma acrylic studio that does custom signs, cake toppers, personalized decor and custom apparel. Get your own RIP sign made on Celebrella →

How to Throw Your Own RIP Birthday
- Name the age you're burying. Put the old number on the tombstone and the new number on the cake. That one detail tells the whole story.
- Pick three colors and stop there. Black, hot pink and gold kept this party glam. Add a fourth and it starts looking like a costume store.
- Make the backdrop do double duty. A sequin wall plus a balloon garland is your decor, your photo booth and your Instagram grid.
- Let the cake carry the spooky. Gold webs and pumpkins on black say "Halloween" without a single plastic skeleton.
- Add one silly thing. Bat heart sunglasses, a "dearly departed" toast, a eulogy for your 30s. Lean into the joke.
- Hire someone to capture it. A content creator means you're in the photos instead of taking them.
DIY: The Spooky Glam Ghost Centerpiece
Want one more "how did you do that?" moment? Make a glowing ghost centerpiece in the party colors. It takes about ten minutes, and it looks amazing on the cake table, the bar or the entry table.
- Start with a lighted ghost vase. A sheer white ghost cover drapes over a clear vase, and fairy lights inside make the whole thing glow.
- Fill it with hot pink and black roses. Instead of plain dark stems, pack the top with faux roses in hot pink, black and deep berry, so the ghost matches the balloons.
- Finish with gold glitter spirals. Tuck a few gold glitter picks between the roses for that glam sparkle, just like the gold on the cake.
Turn the lights on as the sun goes down and it glows all night. Bonus: it works for any Halloween party, not just a birthday.
